Director Of Music
Mark Walker serves as the Director of Music at Hillside Christian Church. He comes to our east Wichita church with a rich heritage of music ministries from churches in Illinois, Mississippi, and Tennessee since he was 19 years old. Mark directs the Chancel Choir and Chancel Handbells, regular participants in Hillside’s worship ministry. Mark creatively blends the worship services with more contemporary praise and worship choruses and hymns, and regularly involves many people in worship with solos, duets, and musical groups. Mark works diligently to blend the traditional with the modern, ensuring that there is something for everyone to partake in at our open-minded church in Wichita.
A native of Southern Illinois, Mark earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Southern Illinois University and earned his Masters in Music Education from Wichita State University. He also served in the United States Air Force from 1983-1987, serving as an electronics specialist, before switching back to a full-time musical career in 1987.
His daily job is overseeing 300+ vocal music students at Wichita Heights High School, conducting six award-winning performing groups. He has served as the Vocal Music Teacher at Heights since 2006 and taught at Wichita South H.S. for three years prior to Heights.
If you have musical talent, talk to Mark, he will get you involved in music ministry in some capacity at Hillside, whether it be contemporary worship or more traditional. He is the proud father of seven children and one grandson.
Carey Hoffman (a Kansas native) was reared in the Hazelton-Kiowa area. After completing college at Fort Hays State University, he moved to Hutchinson, where he spent eighteen years in music retail and sound system sales and service. He moved to Wichita in 2003 and began playing the piano at Hillside Christian Church a few years later. In 2014, he accepted a position in Kansas City, working with audio/video systems. This job placed him squarely in the middle of maintenance and upgrades for places like the Kansas City Royals Stadium. One of his biggest projects was installing and maintaining the video and audio systems for the Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, the largest United Methodist Church in the United States.
He returned to Wichita in January 2019 to accept the position of Organist at Hillside Christian Church. He loves working with the Chancel Choir and the soloists. He also enjoys the “family” of Hillside Christian Church.
